Africa Post #1
Monday, May 24, 2010
The real posts about Africa won’t start until later this year. We’ll be sharing more about exciting developments there as the year progresses.
But we had an excellent tune-up last weekend, participating in Ellie’s Run For Africa - a 5K race that allocates proceeds toward important development initiatives in Kenya. Ellie’s Run was started six years ago by then 10 year old Ellie Ambrose. Now 16, her efforts have raised significant money to help the most needy in the slums of Kiberia.

After parents and older siblings labored through the 5K, the real fun began: the kids’ one mile fun run.

The festivities were designed to give participants a real taste of Africa…

Kudos to Ellie for accomplishing so much Kingdom good at such a young age.
Stay tuned for more about Africa…

The Prequel
Wednesday, May 19, 2010
In many respects, our new film about family businesses is a prequel to The Venture Academy Entrepreneur Training Series.
The film examines the challenges and rewards of family-run businesses. Today we gathered at the idyllic Lyric Springs Retreat Center above Leipers Fork to shoot Wade Myers’ host segments…
The make-up assistant doubled as a stand-in…
We were able to pull Mr. Myers away from his initial encounter with an iPad…
And we’ve had a rewarding day of shooting with our highly knowledgeable and inspiring host…
This exciting new film will be available in mid June.

Here’s a radio interview about George Washington Carver: An Uncommon Way that aired recently on “Christian News Weekly:”
What’s In A Name?
Monday, May 10, 2010
The CNN headline said it best a few days ago: The Volunteer State Lives Up To Its Name.
What’s now being called a 500 or 1,000 year flood ravaged the Nashville area May 1st and 2nd. But what’s emerged as the heart of the story has been the response of Tennesseans.
This weekend, countless numbers of volunteers fanned out across the area, helping friends, families - and strangers. As ferocious as the storm’s torrent was, the subsequent outpouring of generosity and compassion has been stronger.
One of the many casualties of a flood of this magnitude is fences. Here’s a portion of fencing that fared fairly well, but the accumulation of debris from flood waters rendered many fences beyond repair.

The cleanup involves lots of hauling away…
For farms that rely on livestock for part or all of their livelihood, fencing is critical…

On one farm in Centerville, a group of volunteers got after it…

They measured twice and cut once…

They threw everything they could at the cleanup effort…

It was a multi-generational effort…

Gardens that were washed away got replanted…

And by the end of the day, one of countless damaged homesteads had benefited from the good-spirited contribution of Tennessee Volunteers…
