What’s In A Name?
Monday, May 10, 2010
The CNN headline said it best a few days ago: The Volunteer State Lives Up To Its Name.
What’s now being called a 500 or 1,000 year flood ravaged the Nashville area May 1st and 2nd. But what’s emerged as the heart of the story has been the response of Tennesseans.
This weekend, countless numbers of volunteers fanned out across the area, helping friends, families - and strangers. As ferocious as the storm’s torrent was, the subsequent outpouring of generosity and compassion has been stronger.
One of the many casualties of a flood of this magnitude is fences. Here’s a portion of fencing that fared fairly well, but the accumulation of debris from flood waters rendered many fences beyond repair.

The cleanup involves lots of hauling away…
For farms that rely on livestock for part or all of their livelihood, fencing is critical…

On one farm in Centerville, a group of volunteers got after it…

They measured twice and cut once…

They threw everything they could at the cleanup effort…

It was a multi-generational effort…

Gardens that were washed away got replanted…

And by the end of the day, one of countless damaged homesteads had benefited from the good-spirited contribution of Tennessee Volunteers…
No Passage This Way…
Thursday, May 6, 2010
Well, so much for taking the back way into Franklin.
We drove down to the end of our road today for the first time to further explore the effects of the flood.

This is our preferred route into town. Where the creek meets the road has always been a favorite spot. We’ve included it in several previous blog posts; we’ve spent many hours enjoying this special place with family and friends.

Today, much of the asphalt lies in crumpled heaps on the side of the road…

Fortunately, we’ve got another enjoyable route into town, and the kids can cool off in the sprinkler, right?

They’re now calling last weekend’s torrent a “100 year flood”, estimating that damage in the Nashville area alone will exceed $1 billion. With the flood’s death toll in Tennessee now at 21, and with countless homes and businesses ravaged by the water, please pray for the many who have suffered great loss.
Centerville Update
Wednesday, May 5, 2010
Several miles to the West of Franklin lies the small Tennessee town of Centerville, home to many friends of Franklin Springs.
Yes, Franklin and Nashville were hit particularly hard by the flood, but many outlying communities have suffered great damage.
Paul Vaughn, who many of you met in Inherit the Land, sent these pictures from his area of Centerville:

Pray for the people of Centerville, who have been without power and water for several days now. They’ve been through a lot, but they are a hearty stock of Christian brothers and sisters. Pastor Marion Lovett has called a town meeting for Friday night so that people can continue to pull together in their service to each other and to those hurting in the community. Your prayers for them all are appreciated.

Sunny Skies Again
Monday, May 3, 2010
Thank you to all of you in the Franklin Springs community who have remembered our team in recent days through prayer, kind notes, and phone calls. To say it’s been a harrowing several days in Nashville is an understatement.

But the report came in this morning that the office and warehouse are fine. While some of our team members are combating traffic perils due to road closures, things will begin to return to normal throughout the day.
Some of us have been literally stranded out of state, unable to get to Franklin because of the flood. Thanks to Mike Burton for providing maps this morning that show alternate ways into Middle Tennessee; Lord willing, we’ll be back in town later today…
